Nokia 5800 outsells iPhone 5-to-1 in first week
Who would have thought? After being ridiculed at Engadget by "120 Russians can’t be wrong", it turns out that a little correction is needed. The title should say after just 2 days of the official launch: "58,000 Russians can’t be wrong".
According to Eldar, who delivered several Russian 5800 news during the last weeks, by 7th December around 58,000 (isn’t that too much in line with 5800? ;-) Nokia Tubes were sold, with another 46,000 marching towards stores currently – and expected to be sold by the end of the year. But how does that compare?
If we consider that Russians somehow managed to open the stores earlier than the official launch, we are still talking about 12 days of sales. In comparison, Apple has sold only 30,000 iPhone 3Gs in the first 30 days in Russia, which makes the Nokia 5800 xPressMusic a huge success, outselling the iPhone 5-to-1. So, what does it mean for the first S60 touchscreen device?
Judging by the first couple of days of performance in one country does not make a good trend analysis. But it does show, that even if Nokia is missing the Christmas craze and even if the 5800 is not an iPhone-killer, Nokia’s first attempt at a touchscreen competitor is quickly measuring up to the iPhone – at least in sales numbers.
In January, another 7 countries will start selling the 5800 xPressMusic, changing Russia’s 100,000 to world-wide millions. Will it reach the iPhone numbers? I don’t know, but my preorder is on the list at Nokia Italia. Give me the little devil already! ;-)

Lucky you!
I wish I had the money for a preorder! I hope someone is listening! :)
I’m going to wait for Nokia Claus to come to my window on December 24th! LOL
Nokia Claus has sent his little UPS yesterday with my 5800 :-)
I hope there is a Nokia Claus listening to me also! I am really looking forward to this device.
Well, if necessary, I can scream higher so he can listen to me!

Hi,
not being an iPhone fan, I was curious of this news.
But finally you should compare oranges with oranges.
You can’t compare the first week of official apple sales of iPhone in November for Russia with the first EVER sale of the 5800.
In November (when sales in Russia for the iPhone started) the iPhone 3G was already 5 months old, and most enthusiastic users got it through black market.

Here it seems the 3G iPhone sold quite well. 1 million phones in 3 days.
I really wish this data would be available. How many devices were sold, adding up all symbian 3rd ed phones that went on the market during 2008 in their first 3 days of sales for each device?
This would be comparing oranges with oranges.
cheers,
alfonso
Hi Alfonso, thanks for commenting.
If you read the post again, you can see, that I’m not making conclusions. The fact is that it is outselling 5-to-1 in Russia, based on the first 12 days. (Although I even don’t handle these numbers as a fact.) It does not mean anything for the Russian market in the long-term, or for worldwide sales numbers.
Comparing oranges to oranges is just an illusion and will never happen, as there are too many differences in everything ranging from market, number of countries, marketing campaign, available devices, carrier availability, contract types etc. There is always an “excuse” ready to be used, depending on personal beliefs.
Hi there,
thank you for taking your time to answer.
Well, you are right.
So, let’s put it this way. I would find your article more complete if it would clearly state that Russia start selling officially iPhones only 5 months after the launch in US and other countries, so the most enthusiastic users got in through the black market already.
This, in my opinion, means we will never know how many iPhones could have been sold in Russia, if they would have launched it at the same time with the rest of the world.
Or this is at least how I would present this data! ;-)
Thank you!
@Alfonso, thanks for the feedback.
A deeper description of those 30k iPhones was in the linked article, but I’ll think about representing that part also the next time :-)
The pricing for the 5800 in India is far more competitive than the price of an iPhone.
I see the 5800 making a dent in the market in a way that iPhone could only dream of.
The specs for the 5800 are also better. I am not a Nokia fanboy or an Apple fanboy.. but the S60 is a much better platform compared to the OSX used on the iPhone.
After paying INR 33,000 if I can use only one application at a time, I think my money is wasted!
@ Chaplin… stop lying about you being a good boy! LOL!!!
Well, first of all, and now a little bit tired about all this discussion about iPhone, you can’t compare 5800 to iPhone’s capabilities, iPhone was launched several months ago, and the fact that 5800 was a success in Russia it doesn’t mean it will be around the globe. iPhone might not have been successful in Russia, but it was in the rest of the world, like in the US and Europe. You’re not going to compare financial capabilities of americans and europeans to the russian ones, right? So don’t say they’ll buy more Nokia devices than America and Europe will, with the iPhone.
and… YES, I Am a good boy! LOL ;p
Anyway, I’m not saying 5800 is not a good device, I didn’t even touch it, so… ;)
