15 things Nokia should do before 2009

22 November 2008 @ 18:47 3,344 views 20 Comments Renegade Fanboy

Dear Nokia, take these 15 14 items as a todo list. There is not much time left for things, which can be done during December and the holidays. So, why not wrap up a couple of items before the year end, that you can focus on implementing new things in 2009, like my 8 MP 3,5″ gesture controlled T-Series phone? ;-)

Symbian to-do

Beta to-do

Device to-do

  • Run the obituary for the Nokia charger. All E and N series should come with micro-USB charging.
  • Agree to maximum 2 releases per year for N- and E-series
  • Undertake maximum 20 devices per year (two for each series)

Websites to-do

  • Correct the description of each device on the web page. The definitions are wrong, mistyped or simply incomplete. This is unacceptable.
  • Decide on the integration of Download!, Mosh and Share on Ovi
  • Cut the stupid legal text from the Press releases. Link to them.

Ovi to-do

  • Release the first TV advertisements for Ovi Sync worldwide, focusing only on one message.
  • Announce the target for Ovi/Nokia account user number by the end of 2009.
  • Start publishing all past Nokia advertisements 1 advert per day through Share on Ovi

Dear Reader, what do you think? What should be done or decided urgently, which cannot wait until 2009?

Agreed with all of them except for the 2 releases per year one. Maybe push that a little higher to 4-6 Releases a year.
But its true, that there are way too many N-series Devices coming out too fast. Guess its just Nokia capitalizing on the Brand Name.

  • Renegade Fanboy (author) said:

@Cj, my understanding is that N-series is for New. There has to be something big with each device. E.g. N79 doesn’t have any. N78 was followed too quickly w other phones having the FM transmitter. The OLED screen in N85 is nice (I want that as my next device), but it’s not something New.

N9x can be justified as the all-in-one (yet, N96 has no FM transmitter), but if there are 4 releases a year – I would expect four New technologies to be introduced – even if some of them will not become mainstream across the whole portfolio the year after.

Nokia has big troubles differentiating between the 40 models – and they end up forcibly withholding tech from different models, compromising the user experience. In one sentence: “there is always one feature missing from each N-Series phone, which cannot be explained”.

Nokia needs to make a Mobile VPN client that actaully works and can connect using PPTP, OpenVPN, OpenSSL, Cisco Concentrator etc.

This means a lot to those who live in countries like United Arab Emirates, China, & Saudi Arabia where most of the cool sites/services like Last.FM, Flickr, All SIP services, Skype etc, have been blocked for years. This lack of proper VPN support hurts us financially, as much I like Nokia, they really suck at implementing proper VPN.

I hope Nokia hears my cry :_(

    1. Bring back, or make available the DIRECT FLICKR uploader. Don’t make us use OVI.

    2. Bring back a video editor.

3a. Bring back ability to use the A/V cable as audio in on N96.

3b. Give us a cable that allows audio in.

    4. Allow grid video on camera to stay up as the default.

    5. Add white balance to video.

    Thanks,
    –Steve

@Steve, thanks for the additional points (although 3, 4 and 5 might not be quick ones for 2008 :-).

I’ve just tested #1, it works with Share Online 3: http://flickr.com/photos/bluetigger/3056173450/

Good question, why #2 is not happening – is it just software, so it should be available for download, or not?

Drop the Ovi crap. Google has won.

Instead use the money to make cool devices – not just phones!

  • Renegade Fanboy (author) said:

    @Paulo: care to elaborate? :-)

I agree, that Ovi is, well, nowhere, but that’s why I think Nokia should immediately set a challenging public target and start acting on it.

I have concerns about Google, seeing Lively, Feedburner etc. die with the company, so this is far from being lost or won.

  • Ms. Jen said:

    1. Make Lifeblog available as a mobile app on every Nseries or Eseries phone, as it is the ONLY Nokia app that allows me to blog *directly* to my blog with no 3rd party intermediaries.

    2. Make it so that all upload services, be it Ovi, Share Online, Lifeblog, etc., allow one to put in their own provider’s atom or xml-rpc script, username, and password so that we can choose our own services (like Flickr, our own blog, etc.).

    3) 8 Megapixel camera with physical zoom on a candybar.

    4) Allow for more than one Nokia account to be used. Make it easy to toggle amongst accounts. Also take into consideration greater levels of private, family, friend & family, public sharing directly from the mobile to manage this.

Currently I am using two Sports Tracker accounts, one that is private and just for a few peepers, and one that is public.

    5) And about that 8 megapixel camera on a candybar…

    ;o)

Hey Ms. Jen, nice to see you :-)

I’m pretty much thinking about setting up an online petition about Lifeblog. That really was innovative (maybe 3 years ahead of its time) and with lifestreaming becoming the new buzzword, Lifeblog should become alive again – for sharing, blogging and as a PC/Mac client application to view not just your own media, but your friends’ media also!

#2 and #4 are very good suggestions! I would settle for one Nokia account, if the separation, based on Contact groups would be possible. To be renegadefanboy for the public, have a private and a public chat list with different Screen names even.

Lifeblog and the separate identities are both things which could/should be decided in 2008 and then acted upon in 2009.

    Yay for optical zoom! :)

    1) I need a tripod mount. NEED. I dont want to use a flimsy universal grip mount.
    2) The camera software needs to be overhauled. Keypad shortcuts would be very nice.

  • Jim Reverend said:

    Great review. I agree entirely.

I was so looking forward to test driving the E71 and so disappointed when I got my hands on one.

Access Groups would have been a big help. Didn’t even know about these until your post.

Vine/Friend View is a huge killer app.

One thing you didn’t mention … messaging. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to get EMail, SMS, or IM to give me a nice polished “blackberry” feel to it. SMS was very slow to use. EMail even slower regardless of which options I chose and how I set it up. I couldn’t find an IM client that worked well at all. Am I missing someone obvious here?

@Jim Reverend: good point about the IM/e-mail (messaging) situation.

I don’t think that Nokia is close to implementing an integrated and updated (HTML mail!) experience.

Have you tried Nokia Email? (http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/email)
Also, Dotsisx on Symbian-Guru had an update on IM. (http://www.symbian-guru.com/welcome/2008/11/nokia-e71-application-week-day-3-chit-chat.html)

I’ll check IntenseDebate, but as you see I don’t yet have dozens of comments for each post :-) Thanks for the suggestion and BTW, thanks for the 100th comment on this young blog!

    Renegade Fanboy,

I did send some emails to Nokia but not sure which is the right address to email to.

Meantime I was lucky enough to find for the first a third party Symbian VPN app, thanks to ‘BlackN91 ‘ forum member at All About Symbian Forums. I rather get a free app from Nokia than pay for some thrid party app, which should’ve been part of the package from the start.

Hope it works properly with my E71 and my VPN Provider WiTopia.

Gee…I thought I was going to come here and read a wish list of sensible things Nokia needs to do like make an internal GPS unit that actually works without needing half a dozen add ins to make it useful, my BT receiver doesn’t need anything else to work. Also how about getting on top of the lousy build quality (which has made me go to another manufacturer for my new phone, amongst other things) and the lousy quality of parts, especially speakers which on my N95 died within 18 months, I could not take a phone call or play anything on the device, all 3 speakers were dead, utter garbage. Also I thought you might liked to have asked them to make the next uber phone that pretends to be the next big thing after N95 (i.e. N96) to actually have a faster CPU than the old model so it actually was better, that would be nice and it was the killer that really made me buy a different brand, do they really think I’m that stupid I will buy an even slower phone than the one I had? Yes I have nothing better to do than stare at their stupid devices No Data message for half an hour, really….is there some intelligence down at Nokia? They are now so driven by money the product is almost complete garbage. Also you might have asked them to allow a user to modify the time a stupid message stays on the screen of the phone, FFS I am sick to death of all the stupid messages stuck on my screen, I don’t need the F’ing phone to tell me I just plugged it in to the charger, I already F’ing know, I’m the one just plugged it in. So how about it Nokia, an option for how long OR NOT AT BLOODY ALL! And don’t start me on all the signing bullship, what a joke, Vista UAC all over, all it does it annoy the living crap out of the user, wake up Nokia!! The good thing is I don’t have to worry about Nokia garbage anymore, I love my new Samsung, it’s great.
