Nokia Up!, gateway to all updates for your phone

Mike over at Nokia Conversations have posted a promising thought: Nokia might start thinking about how to provide an easier experience to users wanting to keep up with latest firmwares and maybe other updates.

How do you feel about it? I’m so far trusting my integrated RSS feed and great sites which publish the news. But to have a tool which actually alerts me to new firmware or additions to Download! (please let there be another one ;-) would be a very good start. It could be called Nokia Up! :-)

One thing, which is striking about Apple’s App Store is not the quality or the amount of apps. It’s the integrated experience. I would bet some serious money that not more than 1% of Nokia users are aware of the firmware update option. A quick look around my friends: they don’t even know the capabilities of their phones, let alone would download more then ringtones or Java games.

So, what do we have which would worth introduction for the users?

firmware updates (preferably automatic and invisible after a certain safety period, like 3 months)
modules or new software (e.g. Nokia Maps 2.0 push, before a new firmware)
the infamous App Store topic (why, why, why? :-)
licences (Maps, Files)
free services (Ovi Sync)
new devices targeted at upgrading users (e.g. user, who yearly buys new devices)
My Nokia, educational videos (if you understand how much your device can do, you stay more loyal and advocate)
anything I left out? :-)

While it’s nice to have all these offerings, there are a couple of basic requirements also:

silent updates directly or sideloaded via PC/Mac client
integrated single point experience (okay, maybe the PC client could replicate the functionality)
ecosystem creation, so finally there is a push and adequate content inside these channels
1. a Handago store
2. trailers of studios
3. shops, updates and news of carrier (carriers would love Nokia for this)

What do you think? I think it would be nice to have it, as many mentioned already regarding the Download! client. Yet, there is still the possibility to take it to the next level – maybe in 6 months or so. Unfortunately, Nokia is already being pushed out from developers heart, so time is ticking…
